Will the Hadron Collider be a Smashing Success?

Near Geneva the Hadron Super Collider is gearing up for it’s first experiments beginning tomorrow. It will be smashing protons together after they follow a 17 mile circuit. The device looks like something out of a 1950’s science fiction movie. It is buried 300 feet underground for safety reasons concerning temporary radiation.

The experiment will hopefully show scientist what happened during the big bang amongst other questions. The machine will allow for observation of subatomic particles that are cast off during the moment the protons smash into each other. There has been a buzz on Nation Public Radio about the ramp up, for the past week with great coverage. It even included a rap song written by a young scientists who has been working on the project.

With 111 different countries who are participating there is a lot of excitement leading up to the collider coming online this week. Don’t be expecting any earth shaking results right away it may take up to a year to sift through the results for any new discoveries. In any case the collider is a testament to the nature of man to learn and quest for knowledge. If the Hadron Collider ends up only being a symbol of that spirit it was still worth the millions spent and has already succeeded.

The benefit from such endeavors is not always apparent yet can effect our lives for generations to come. You don't have to be a Physicists to appreciate the eternal longing to understand.

Some scientists are concerned about mini-black holes may develop in this project's experiments that could possibly disturb/distroy Earth's atmosphere.

An acquaintance of mine, Dr David Evans, works on the Hadron Project and was on the TV other day. If David is involved I think there will be no black holes to worry about.

Madam Currie died 14 years after initial experiments with gama and x-ray radiation. Prior to her personal sacrifice, it was "unknown" that prolong exposure to radiation could be fatal. A 6 billion dollar machine that requires 30 million dollars in electricity, to operate, just to "test a theory" of how the universe begain, strikes me as being just as useful a the Tower of Babel; non-scientists should not assume an experiment is a good idea just becasue the so-called experts want to test theories like the Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment; they wanted an un-established data-base of black men to compare with an established data-base of non-black men. The only thing they learned is that untreated black men out-lived other men treated or not.
